The Ferrari Roma

The Ferrari Roma (Type F169) is an Italian grand touring and high performance sports car created by the car manufacturer Ferrari. It is a mid-size, two-door, 2+2 hardtop coupe. It has a front mid-engine and rear-wheel drive. Based on the Ferrari Portofino, the car is an ultra-high performance turbocharged V8 model placed between the Portofino and the F8 Tributo in Ferrari's sports car lineup. The name Roma comes directly from ancient Roman mythology. The vehicle was named in honor of the Italian capital and was initially presented online on November 13, 2019 The official public unveiling of the car took place the following day in Rome.

1  Presentation

The Ferrari Roma was unveiled on November 13, 2019 at the Stadio dei Marmi sports stadium in Italy. It is a 2+ coupe sports car according to Ferrari (2 front seats + 2 booster seats in the back), and it is a competitor to the Aston Martin DB11, McLaren GT or even the Bentley Continental GT.

It is based on the Portofino coupe-cabriolet, with a completely different body and interior. The line is refined and less radical than the latest models of the prancing horse manufacturer (SF90 Stradale, F8 Tributo)2.

The Ferrari Roma was exhibited in the Italian capital on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the declaration of Rome as the capital of a united Italy3.

The Roma is sold by Ferrari with an extended service program including maintenance, parts and labor for 7 years.

2  Design

The styling language that inspired the Ferrari Roma aims to highlight the Nuova Dolce Vita, which in Italian means "pleasant way of life," a theme that marked the Italian capital in the 1950s and 1960s. In this sense, the vehicle embodies a unique departure from the stylistic language of all current Ferrari cars. It strives to achieve a balance between modern ultra-high performance, cutting-edge design and timeless elegance.

3  Rear view of the Ferrari Roma

The overall exterior is reminiscent of the 250 GTO race car, as well as the 250 GT Lusso and 250 GT 2+2 grand tourer. The model also shares deep roots with the 612 Scaglietti. The front of the car is inspired by the flagship SF90 Stradale sports car, while the car's side profile is reminiscent of the 812 Superfast. Significant design elements include a body-colored grille, flush door handles, slim LED lights at the front and rear, a deep chin spoiler and an active rear spoiler that flushes at speeds below 100 km/h.

4  Roma dual cockpit design

The interior focuses on the dual-cockpit theme, with separate driver and passenger cells. It is described as a "2+" interior by Ferrari with a small space for the rear seat. The dashboard features digital instrumentation (a 16.0-inch wrap-around touchscreen) and a multifunction steering wheel (both shared with the SF90 Stradale) for the driver. The trim piece that runs across the center of the cabin separates the driver and passenger and blends seamlessly with the dashboard. A center-mounted 8.4-inch portrait touchscreen controls most of the car's functions. A third horizontal touch screen can be integrated into the dashboard on the passenger side of the cockpit. This screen allows the passenger to access the climate control system controls as well as the multimedia and navigation controls. The passenger can also view the car's performance metrics. This third touch screen emphasizes the passenger's role as navigator and co-pilot. A newly designed key allows the driver to open the car's doors by pressing a button near the car's flush door handles.

5  Specifications and performance

1 Engine and transmission

The Roma is powered by the award-winning Ferrari F154 engine. It is a 3.9-liter (3855 cc), turbocharged, 90-degree, DOHC V-8 engine. Roma's Type 154BH produces 620 PS (456 kW; 612 hp) between 5,750 and 7,500 rpm and 761 N⋅m (561 lb⋅ft) of torque between 3,000 and 5,750 rpm.

The forced induction air intake system uses two parallel water-cooled turbochargers and two air-to-air intercoolers. The dry-sump lubrication system prevents oil starvation during high-gravity operations.

The engine is paired with the new F1 8-speed dual-clutch transmission shared with the SF90 Stradale. This new unit results in greater acceleration in the middle gears with an extended top gear for highway cruising. Ferrari claims that there is 15 percent more longitudinal traction in third gear compared to the previous generation's 7-speed unit. The gearbox has an electronic differential and a mechanical reverse gear that contrasts with the SF90's electric motor reverse. This design weighs 13 pounds (6 kg) less than the 7-speed unit used in the Portofino and is said to provide faster, smoother shifts. Much of the weight savings is due to the design of the dry sump and the alloy primary oil pan, which is compact and tightly wraps the various engine components.

2 Suspension

The double wishbone, coil spring and anti-roll bar design also features an optional MagneRide dynamic shock absorber system that allows for more compact and controlled vehicle operation using magnetorheological dampers.

3 Electronics

The Roma comes standard with Ferrari's F1-Trac traction control, 6.0 sideslip control technology, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Power Start control and Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer. It also features a five-position Manettino dial on the steering wheel to select the vehicle's driving mode between wet, comfort, sport, race and ESC-off.

The Roma's electronic interior cockpit controls also represent a major departure from recent Ferrari road cars. The human-machine interface (HMI) is largely a digital touchscreen control system, also shared with the SF90 Stradale. Touchscreen control extends to some steering wheel functions.

Some driver assistance systems, such as front and rear radar with adaptive cruise control, are also available as options to make long trips easier.

4 Weight

The Roma was designed to weigh 200 kg (440 lbs) less than the Portofino while being based on the same platform. This was achieved through a stiffer body structure and the general use of lighter parts. With these lightweight components, the car's dry weight is 1,472 kg (3,245 lbs). Its curb weight (without the driver) is 1,570 kg (3,460 lb).

The published weight distribution is 50 percent front and 50 percent rear. Ferrari claims that 70% of the parts used on the Roma are new compared to the Portofino.

5 Aerodynamics

The dynamic rear wing activates automatically at high speeds to help the vehicle generate downforce. The three wing positions are: low drag (0-100 km/h), medium downforce (100-300 km/h) and high downforce (100-300 km/h cornering and braking). Maximum deployment is rated at 95 kg (209 lbs) of downforce at 250 km/h (155 mph). The rear spoiler is complemented by a pair of underbody vortex generators that create a ground effect and manage the front wheel wake for effective load management. The vortex generators are very effective in creating downforce on the front axle with negligible increase in drag. The electrically activated movable spoiler provides downforce on the rear axle to optimally balance the car.

6 Wheels, tires and brakes

Twenty-inch cast aluminum wheels are standard, and 20-inch forged alloy wheels are optional. The tires used on the Roma measure 285/35 ZR20s in the rear and 245/35 ZR20s in the front. The model was shown with a choice of Pirelli, Michelin or Bridgestone tires. Bridgestone run-flat tires could also be fitted to the car.

The Roma is equipped with 390mm carbon-ceramic ventilated disc brakes at the front and 360mm at the rear. The Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer controls the yaw angle by activating the car's individual brake calipers, a first for a Ferrari GT model. The FDE proportionally adjusts brake pressure to one or more wheels depending on the situation. On the Roma, it is only applied in the Race setting of the manettino. FDE is not a stability control system; it accompanies the traditional ESC to make the skidding dynamics smoother, more predictable and more controllable. This is in line with the purpose of the Race position itself, which is driving pleasure and fun behind the wheel.

7 Exhaust System

A redesigned exhaust system uses particulate filters (similar to diesel particulate filters) for emissions control. This was achieved by removing the mufflers and adding bypass valves. It was designed to retain, improve and expand the engine's exhaust note while reducing particulate emissions.

8 Performance

The Roma's published top speed is 199 mph (320 km/h). Performance figures include 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.4 seconds and 0-200 km/h (62 mph) in 9.3 seconds. The Roma's dry weight to power ratio is best in class at 2.37 kg/hp (5.3 lb/hr).

9 Various

The Roma has a 12 cubic foot trunk and additional storage space behind the two front seats. An option of folding rear seatbacks expands the storage configuration. As part of the car's grand touring theme, and like some other models, the Roma can be ordered with a specially designed multi-piece luggage set that fits efficiently in the vehicle's rear trunk. The luggage matches the leather of the interior.

 10 Price

The base price for Ferrari Roma is $218,670 in 2020 USD, or $222,620 cmop including destination charges. Typical final configurations can range from $270,000 to $310,000. 70% of buyers will be first-time Ferrari customers.
